OPEN SPACE

Darmstadt Summer Course for New Music 2010 & 2012

In preparation of his first edition as new director, Thomas Schäfer invited me to join a group of people to rethink the Darmstädter Ferienkurse für Neue Musik (Darmstadt Summer Course).

My contribution to this important hothouse for the post-WWII avant-garde was a new format called OPEN SPACE: a freely available resource for self-organised knowledge exchange and experimentation that runs autonomously and parallel to the official curriculum of the Summer Course.

In order to give the project an impulse and a direction, I curated programs for the first two editions in 2010 and 2012, inviting guests like Jan Ritsema, Xavier Le Roy, Bojana Cvejić, Wolfgang Fiel, Klaus Neundlinger, and Adam Harper. In its first year, more than 100 self-organised projects were realised by participants and tutors alike. Since then, OPEN SPACE is an integral and vital part of the Darmstadt Summer Course.
